Lukla Airport, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is notorious for its unique set of challenges that make it a formidable destination for pilots and travelers alike. The airport is situated at an altitude of 2,860 meters (9,383 feet) and is surrounded by rugged mountainous terrain. The runway is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long, with a sheer drop at one end and a steep incline at the other, leaving little margin for error during takeoff and landing. These physical constraints necessitate precision and skill, and only highly experienced pilots are permitted to operate flights to and from Lukla.
