Overview

Women led Everest Base Camp

As you trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp, you’ll quickly notice the essential role women play in the Khumbu region. From tending vegetable gardens to running kitchens and welcoming trekkers in the lodges, they are the heartbeat of Sherpa hospitality. But their contributions go far beyond home and lodge management—many have stepped into the mountaineering and trekking industry, proving their strength in one of the world’s toughest environments.

In 2018, we organized an all-women trek to Everest Base Camp, led by local Sherpa women guides, in partnership with a women’s adventure travel group. Finding experienced female guides from Khumbu wasn’t easy, though. Many women in the region already own and manage local lodges, balancing business and family life with incredible dedication. After months of searching, we connected with a select group of remarkable women guides who brought deep local knowledge, resilience, and an inspiring perspective to the trek.

Why Choose a Women-Led Everest Base Camp Trek?

A traditional Everest Base Camp Trek already offers spectacular mountain scenery. This journey adds another dimension: the opportunity to travel with local Sherpa women and learn more directly about life in the Khumbu.

Women are an important part of Sherpa communities. They manage homes and businesses, work in lodges, support mountain tourism and increasingly take leadership roles as trekking and mountaineering professionals.

This journey was created to provide travelers with a closer connection to that side of Himalayan life.

What makes this trek different?

  • Led by experienced local Sherpa women
  • Authentic insight into Sherpa culture and daily life
  • Classic Everest Base Camp route
  • Two dedicated acclimatization periods
  • Visit to Tengboche Monastery
  • Sunrise hike toward Kala Patthar
  • Dramatic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam
  • Teahouse accommodation along the trekking route
  • Opportunity to support local women working in Himalayan tourism
  • Kathmandu cultural experiences before and after the trek

Meet Your Sherpa Women Guides

One of the defining features of this trip is the opportunity to trek with local Sherpa women from the Everest region.

Fura Diki Sherpa and Nima Doma Sherpa are among the women associated with this journey. Their personal experiences demonstrate the resilience and determination of Sherpa women who have taken active roles in the mountains.

The story of these women is particularly meaningful because both have experienced the risks faced by families connected with Himalayan mountaineering. They later pursued their own mountaineering achievements and now work with trekkers in the Khumbu.

Their knowledge goes beyond navigation. During the journey, they can help you understand Sherpa traditions, mountain communities, Buddhist culture and the realities of life at high altitude.

A Journey Through Sherpa Culture

The Everest Base Camp route is not only a mountain journey.

As you walk through the Khumbu, you pass traditional Sherpa villages, mani walls, prayer flags, Buddhist monuments, monasteries and mountain settlements that have developed around the demanding Himalayan environment.

Namche Bazaar is an important Sherpa trading center and one of the main acclimatization stops on the route. Tengboche is home to one of the best-known Buddhist monasteries in the Everest region.

The route therefore combines mountain adventure with opportunities to understand the culture and traditions that shape life in the Khumbu.

How Difficult Is the Women-Led Everest Base Camp Trek?

The Everest Base Camp Trek is a moderate-to-challenging high-altitude trekking journey.

You do not need technical mountaineering skills to complete the standard route, but you should be prepared for:

  • Several hours of walking each day
  • Steep uphill and downhill sections
  • Rocky and uneven mountain trails
  • Suspension bridges
  • Long trekking days at high altitude
  • Cold conditions at higher elevations
  • Basic teahouse accommodation
  • Reduced oxygen at elevations above 3,000 meters

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not essential.

Good preparation includes regular walking, hiking, stair climbing, cardiovascular exercise and longer weekend hikes before arriving in Nepal.

Permits and Trekking Requirements

The Everest Base Camp route passes through Sagarmatha National Park and requires the applicable trekking permits and documentation.

The Nepal Tourism Board currently identifies Everest Base Camp Trek among the Everest-region routes where trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and carry an agency-issued TIMS card under the applicable TIMS provisions.

Your trekking operator handles the permits and required trekking documentation included in the package.

Experience Everest Through a Different Perspective

What to Expect

Expand All

Note On Itinerary

Although we generally stick to the schedule date, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions, lodging availability, and the group’s general timing.

Qualification

The Langtang trek is considered moderate. It’s a great introduction to trekking the Himalayas, particularly if you are nervous of the more high altitude expeditions. The highest point on the trail is 5,364 meters. However, you will have the option to opt out if you wish.

Air Travel

Please check with your travel agent for a better route to fly into the arriving destination. We advise you to check with us before purchasing your airline tickets to ensure your trip has the necessary minimum number of participants required to operate.

Weather

The two best seasons for the Everest trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-Sept to mid-Dec). The winter months are also possible, however, you will have to prepare yourself for some cold nights!

Distance of the Trek

The route is 65 miles or 110 km. This means that you will be trekking for an average of 6 hours per day on the 17-day itinerary.

Lukla Flight Note

Please note that often the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight gets delayed by a few hours or may even be canceled for one, two, or more days due to unfavorable weather conditions. Such conditions may arise even in the best seasons. Hence, in such cases, you must be prepared for long waits either at Kathmandu or Lukla airports, as this can happen either at the start or end of the trek or even both! We will do our best to avoid such delays, and arrange the next flight for you.

In such a situation, we have covered you to take a Helicopter ride from the airport to airport.  It can be from either other end airports.  We will be able to cover 1 time use of helicopter one-way only.

The helicopter charges around USD 3500 and it can lift 4-5 persons per flight. Still, we suggest you be prepared for possible delays/cancellations, and if possible to come with some extra buffer days (1-2 days) at the end of the trip to accommodate such delays. If everything runs smoothly and you still have a few days of your buffer days left then you may even engage yourself in optional activities which can be arranged by Last Frontiers upon request. The optional activities may include visiting places/landmarks of your choice, adventure sports, shopping, etc.

However, please note that there will be no refund, if you lose time waiting at the airport and do not take an alternative tour or you only do a short trek later due to time limitation. If the cancellation happens before the trip, we will provide you with accommodation and lunch in a guesthouse in Kathmandu. In case of a flight delay/cancellation after finishing the trek, you will be responsible for all your expenses. Please also note that you will not be entitled to any refund for the services (such as hotel, transport, flight, etc.) included in the package that you would not use later.

Accommodation

Accommodation during the trekking section is provided in locally operated teahouses and mountain lodges.

Rooms are generally simple and may include twin beds with shared bathroom facilities.

Facilities become more basic as you gain altitude. Heating is generally concentrated in communal dining areas rather than bedrooms.

In Kathmandu, accommodation is provided at the designated hotel according to the package arrangement.

Food and Meals

Meals during the trek are provided through the mountain lodges.

Typical options can include:

  • Dal bhat
  • Rice
  • Noodles
  • Pasta
  • Soup
  • Potatoes
  • Eggs
  • Bread
  • Vegetables
  • Tea and coffee

The package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner during the trekking portion according to the published itinerary.
