1. Tiger’s Nest
Tiger’s Nest, without a doubt, is one of the most popular destinations when planning a trip to Bhutan. This is a very popular destination for everyone from travelers to locals. With a 900 meter climb to reach the monastery, this hike will probably be the most peaceful and challenging hike that provides you with the most wonderful view. The Monastery that lays on the edge of a cliff provides the most wonderful view of Paro valley. Tiger’s Nest is locally also known as Tak-chang which is a direct translation to Tiger’s Nest. It is also known as one of the holy places in buddhism that is surrounded by peace and a holy atmosphere. With very close proximity to Paro, this is one of the best hikes and location to take amazing pictures of the Paro Valley.
2. Punakha Dzong
Bhutan being known as one of the happiest country in the world, Punakha Dzong is known to be the Palace with Great Happiness. Dzong refers to fort like structures surrounded by walls, and Punakha Dzong is considered to be the most enchanting, gorgeous and majestic Dzong. This majestic Dzong is surrounded by two rivers named Pho Chhu (male), and Mo Chhu (female) in the Punakha valley. Both rivers being fed in by the fresh waters melting from the glaciers, this is a place must when it comes to experiencing. It also houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa linage, making it s very holy place. Located within a 3 hour driving distance from Thimpu, this is a great location to experience the beauty of nature along with the cultural significance.
3. National Museum and Zuri Dzong Fort Hike
Starting from National Museum of Bhutan, this is a place you need to visit if you want to see all the culturally significant history from over 1500 years of Bhutanese heritage. From here, within a 30 min hiking distance, you can get one of the best birds eye view of the Paro Valley. Zuri Dzong Fort is one of the oldest Dzong with many historically significant location. You can also find the cave where Gautam Buddha meditated back in the 8th century. You will need to visit this location yourself so experience the beauty and serenity this place will provide.
4. Dochula Pass
On the way to Punakha from Thimpu, you will not want to miss this wonderful location. With 108 Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens (stupas), Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), and the rhododendron garden which is part of the 47 km2 Royal Botanical Park; this is where you will want to stop by on the way from Thimpu to Punakha. On the walls of the Lakhang (temple) you can see many paintings on the themes of Bhutanese history. This was built as a memorial to celebrate 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan and holds significant value.
5. Gangtsey Valley in Winter
A place where nature has expressed its beauty in amazing ways, Gangtsey Valley is a winter wonderland in Bhutan. This popularly known valley is also known as the Shangri-la of Bhutan. The green grassland surrounded by dense forest is anything less but amazing. This place is specially beautiful in the winter time. A Shangri-la within the a country that is considered to be the the happiest country is something you will not want to miss out on.
